Altissimo

Breeder- Delbard-Chabert 1966
Parentage- 'Tenor'seedling
Generally classified as a climber but in reality a large shrub. The canes are sturdy and stiff so aren't suitable for an arch. Grown on a verandah, pillar or espaliered on a fence would probably be fine, but the best example I have seen is as a huge free standing shrub that was around 3 metres high and 2 metres wide-very impressive this is the way I've grown always Altissimo although never to that size. As for the general overview Altissimo is vigorous, tough and bears huge single blooms of a bright crimson with a velvety bloom they are usually borne in sprays of 5 to 7.
