Species Roses For The Garden

If you want a 'no care' garden consider some of the species roses which are grown for perfumed flowers or for their ferny, coloured or fragrant foliage, and in some species the hips are the major feature. They can be used as hedges, ground covers, climbers or specimens. There are Species roses that will suit every climate within Australia from cold and wet to extremely hot and dry.

Species roses tolerate poor soils and the only maintenance they need is cutting out any dead wood annually when they are dormant.

Good Garden Bugs

Following are some photos of your friendly garden helpers-some of them are very small but they all abound in my garden which is where these pics were taken. Parasitic Wasps lay their eggs into aphids and 'mummify' them. You can see the little 'door' in some of the aphid shells where the wasps have exited. If you look closely you will see some of these tiny wasps emerging from the aphid shells.

In The Garden

When I first picked up a hoe I was often at a loss and wished there was somewhere handy to go for lessons in home gardening - like you can to TAFE for a lesson in decoupage or photography - a long time ago - before the www was invented and everything I wanted to know was handy on a PC near me.

Companion Plants Herbs

Herbs aren’t a cure-all but can have a beneficial effect in the vegetable garden by deterring pests, attracting beneficial insects or enhancing growth or flavour of vegetables. Herbs can be planted around the edges of the vegetable beds or throughout the garden between the vegetables. Some herbs can be invasive; these ones are best planted in pots which can then be moved around the vegetable garden to where they are best needed.
