Louisiana irises

Bird painting artist Audubon first used the term “Lousiana flag” to refer to these beautiful big brightly coloured irises. Found across southern USA from Florida and the Carolinas to Texas, and the Mississippi valley, this group is made up of 5 species.

Growing Louisiana Irises

Louisiana irises will grow in most climates in Australia, in full sun or partial shade, so long as their water requirements can be met. Blooming from early Spring to early summer, they produce many large and colourful blooms. They require a rich acidic soil or potting mix, and appreciate having their rhizomes heavily mulched.

In hotter, more humid climates the beautiful Lousiana irises reign supreme.Shady gardens provide ideal conditions for Pacific Coast irises, some of the Evansia family, and I. foetedissima.Tall bearded iris and Arilbred iris will do well in very dry conditions, and spuria and siberian iris in a deep moist soil.
