Ron Bell was instrumental in the foundation of the Australian Rose Breeder s Association. He is also very active within the Rose Society of Victoria. In 1979 he received the T.A. Stewart Memorial Award.
His breeding program has concentrated on hybrid teas of exhibition type.
April Hamer: 1983 Hybrid Tea. Silver to rose pink blooms, deepening with age, with a good fragrance. Of exhibition standard. A free-flowering bush with good disease resistance.
Collegiate Pride: Hybrid Tea. Red, well-formed double blooms. An attractive. healthy and free-flowering bush to 1.25m. Presented to St Michael’s Collegiate School, Tasmania.
Janet Murray: 1985 Hybrid Tea. Apricot pink double blooms on long stems. An attractive, disease resistant and free-flowering bush.
Marjorie Atherton: 1977 Hybrid Tea. Deep yellow fully double blooms with firm petals, on long erect stems. Approaching exhibition standard. Very disease resistant and quite vigorous. Fragrant and free-flowering. Featured in the Australian Rose Stamp Series in 1983.
Mary Delahunty: 1990 Hybrid Tea. Dark velvety red fully double blooms of very good form on a free-flowering and fairly compact bush. Named after an ABC TV journalist.
Our Rosmund: 1983 Hybrid Tea. Silvery pink, double, exhibition-type blooms, with darker flushes. Long-stemmed and fragrant. A healthy and free-flowering bush to 1.25m.
Ruyton: Hybrid Tea. Double pink blooms on a free-flowering bush to 1.5m. Presented to Ruyton Girls School, Melbourne.
The Australian Bicentennial Rose: 1986 Hybrid Tea. Bright red, fully double, fragrant blooms on a healthy and free-flowering bush to 1.25m.
The Roseville College Rose: Hybrid Tea. Yellow pink and red blooms on a free-flowering and vigorous bush. Presented to Roseville College. Sydney.
Water Music: Pillar. Large semi-double pink and cream blooms. A vigorous and healthy plant to 4m.
